The Start
Today I would like to tell you all about why I like and play Dungeons & Dragons, but before I do, I want to bring everyone to the beginning. The beginning of how I became a geek in the first place. My dad was and is a geek/nerd, and although I don’t entirely think that I got my geekiness from him, it’s possible that a part of him being a geek/nerd rubbed off on me. Even though I grew up in a divorced home, and my mom raised me, I got to see him here and there in my childhood, but I don’t think my dad is the reason as to why I’m a geek. In fact, I actually owe my geekiness more to Saturday morning cartoons than anything else. When I was in first grade, I was in a foster home for a short amount of time, and it was there that I discovered Saturday morning cartoons like Yugi’oh, Pokemon, Digimon, and some other niche ones. My childhood felt like one of the best times of my life, starting right off with playing Yugi’oh cards with my brother, and also playing various video games. It wasn’t until middle school that I really started to branch out, getting into manga, anime, Old School Runescape, some other geeky things, and of course, Dungeons & Dragons. My mom was the one who found out about a group playing at a library, and she knew I liked geeky things, so once a week she drove me to that library, and I started playing a game that is still a part of my life nowadays. I want to clarify that my mom isn’t a geek, just in case anyone was wondering, but I’m thankful that she has recognized somewhat of what I’m into and has been such an awesome mom towards those things!
The Progression

When I started playing D&D, it was in version 3.5, which because it’s my first version, is one of my favorite versions. I can’t lie though; version 5.0 is definitely my favorite. My first character was a human druid, and one of my favorite memories of that character was having my wolf companion. I also remember one session I had drank five mountain dew cans, and had to constantly go to the bathroom, each time apologizing (which is funny to me today when I recall that). Throughout middle school, I would be playing D&D at this same library, at least as far as I remember. I remember one of the players had set up another campaign, which was an evil one! I don’t remember what character I played then, but I remember setting fire to a village! Most of my specific memories of that time are a little blurry (I remember mainly just learning how to play the game), but it definitely had an impact on me. When I got to high school, there were a lot of changes, and I don’t remember if there was a time I played D&D, but I do remember I played another ttrpg (tabletop roleplaying game for those that don’t know). I don’t remember the name, but it had a unique hit system where you would roll a couple dice together to see which part of the body to hit. Now we come to when I started being a dungeon master, but I also don’t remember when I first did it. All I can say is that I’ve enjoyed it almost every time (with a couple of flops that didn’t feel too good). There was a point when I stopped dm’ing because I had felt that I wasn’t a good dm, and so lost all motivation to do it. Sometime last year I had joined two groups as a player and have been really enjoying my time in those groups. Interestingly enough, my spark for dm’ing has been re-lit due to various means, one of which is the dm’s in my groups. Now I’m writing a campaign for some of my friends and am super stoked to bring them a fully fleshed out world! What I really like as a dungeon master is storytelling and roleplaying, especially doing voices! I am really happy with how I’ve progressed in Dungeons & Dragons, and hope to continue doing it for the rest of my life!
Current Proficiency

I mentioned how I’m currently in two groups as a player. I will say that as a player I can be smart and make some interesting characters and roleplay. In my roommates’ group I am a Vedalken Chrono Wizard (blue-skinned human time wizard), who is very much a rule follower and takes the law seriously; in the other group I am a Japanese Tortle Ranger/Monk (I just get dubbed as a ninja turtle), who speaks Japanese, loves to make friends, and also at times really likes to decapitate enemies. I’ve noticed the more I play, the better I get at roleplaying, telling better stories, creating fantastic worlds, and just can’t get enough die rolling in! Currently I own the three base books for 5th edition (Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide); some Kobold minis; a couple of character minis; several dice sets (including a metal one!); a Chessex grid (one side squares the other side hexagons); starter set; dungeon tiles; character, npc, and monster tokens; a dice rolling tray; character sheets with the D&D folder for them; and a dm screen are the official stuff I own. There are some other various things like office supplies that I use for dm’ing, and also various apps and websites for characters and dm’ing. I also have a book I haven’t really read that’s supposed to teach me how to be a better role player; I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually.
Answering the Question

So why do I play Dungeons & Dragons? It’s actually pretty simple: for fun! I find that telling stories or being a part of one; roleplaying; rolling dice and crunching numbers; fellowship in a world of shared imagination; and learning life skills (yes, you can actually learn life skills from this game), all play into why I find this game to be so much fun! Also, as an adventurous person, along with always having found the fantasy genre to be unique and interesting, goes along with why I find this game to be enjoyable!
